About the Winooski Community Partnership
The Winooski Community
Partnership (formerly known as Downtown Winooski Inc.) (WCP) is a tax
exempt, non-profit organization formed in 2003. Its mission is to promote
and support revitalization efforts and economic development in the
Winooski Designated Downtown. This is accomplished through the
collaboration of Winooski community groups, business interests, City and
State governing bodies with regards to ongoing development efforts, the
promotion of quality community living, the identification of community
needs, and to provide aid, assistance, and other additional resources to
ensure a vibrant downtown center which will benefit the entire Winooski
Community.
Four committees, emulating the National Main Street Center’s “four-point
approach”, to downtown revitalization, carry out WCP activities. The
committees report to a board of nine directors who guide the organization
in the fulfillment of its objectives.
The WCP was formed, in part, to help Winooski achieve status as a
“designated downtown” under the Vermont Downtown Program within the Agency
of Commerce. That status means the municipality and property owners in the
Downtown Development District are eligible for certain State grants and
tax credits, and that the WCP may obtain information and technical
services from the Vermont Downtown Network, which is made up of staff and
board members of several dozen similar organizations.
On a local level, the WCP collaborates with the City of Winooski, and
other non-profit organizations such as the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber
of Commerce. To support downtown merchants and to alert the local and
regional communities that downtown Winooski is again open for business,
after many years of construction, the WCP hosted the first Winooski
RiverWalk Celebration in June 2006. A Harvest Festival is scheduled for
September 2006 and more varied and exciting events are being planned for
2007.
