Winooski Downtown Revitalization Project The Winooski revitalization project is the largest of its kind in the history of Vermont, and has involved a remarkable array of federal, State, area and local participants. Governor Douglas has referred to the project as the “…best example of Smart Growth in Vermont”. The first phase of the development plan, which came into service in January, 2006, includes: a new VSAC office building of 108,000 square feet; 27,000 square feet of new neighborhood retail space; a bus station, university-affiliated housing for 300 students; a 930 car, six level parking garage; and completely new utility and highway infrastructure, including new streets, trees, parks, and sidewalks. The next phases of the revitalization which began this winter include an entire city block with 208 rental housing units, including mixed-income family rental, luxury apartments, and 4,000 square feet of retail space; renovation of the 156,000 square foot national-register historic Champlain Mill, and a RiverWalk, following the Winooski River and overlooking the cascades. Three subsequent phases are planned, to include a grocery store; an office building; possibly a hotel; and 150 for-sale riverfront condominiums. The fifth phase, of additional housing is slated for 2008. |
